San Diego, CA: Beerology and Craft Beers

In San Diego craft beer is a prevalent part of the dining culture. Nothing represents this better than the Beerology exhibit at The Museum of Man in Balboa Park which is running through the Summer of 2014. This is evidenced by the booming number of local craft breweries in the area pumping out beers from special blends and labeled with enticing names. On any night of the week local beer drinkers can enjoy Double Bastard, Pearl Necklace, Belching Beaver, Satanic Chimp, Red Headed Hop Child, or Old Viscosity.

Ancient Egyptians, Sumerians, Chinese, and other cultures are represented in this exhibit and their strange, albeit clever brewing arts. The headhunters from the Amazon, chewed poisonous cassava root to create their unique beer (although the exhibit points out they rarely go headhunting any longer). Women of one tribe chews roots and spits them back into a bowl, which is then fermented and brewed to create the special "craft" brew.

The history of beer is quite fascinating dating back to the beginning of recorded history. The production of beer is credited with the creation of mathematics, property ownership, record keeping, and medicine. From Mesopotamia to San Diego, California, beer has been a healing and convivial part of our culture for over 10,000 years.

After enjoying the exhibit, one can travel to a number of local breweries to imbibe. Monkey Paw Brewery, Mission Brewery, Stone Brewery, Green Flash, Alesmith, Acoustic Ales and Ballast Point, all have tasting rooms within a short drive of Balboa Park. Most serve only beer, no other drinks or food, and are designed for the taste buds of the true beer connoisseur. But to enjoy a variety of beers in one location, and perhaps some delicious cuisine that compliments the local frothy broths, plenty of restaurants keep a good reserve on hand.

57 Degrees carries a nice variety of beer as well as being a wine retail store, wine bar, wine storage facility, and restaurant. Scrumptious selections of food, wine and of course, beer are available in this contemporary and lively venue. Serving also as an event facility, there is no shortage of vibrant and stimulating energy among the patrons and staff. To enjoy the perfect beverage while taking in the perfect sunset, overlooking San Diego Bay, 57 Degrees is the best location for a laid back vibe to end the day.

Another fantastic brewery that has it all, delectable food, a variety of drinks and of course, some of the finest craft beer, is Hillcrest Brewing Company. Touted as "The World’s First Out and Proud LGBT Brewery", HBC is located next door to the iconic Hillcrest Pride Flag and serves some of the best pizza one can find in San Diego. Hillcrest is known for it's wide variety of open-minded lifestyles and HBC seems to be a central location for locals and visitors alike to let their hair down and be real. The raucous laughter of the beer and pizza consumers is consistent from open to close here.

San Diego, CA: Beer and Cheese Pairings in North Park

If your idea of cheese and beer is Cheetos and Bud at a football game, think again.

Such a pairing of carefully curdled delicacies and hops has gotten much more sophisticated, as I learned at Thorn Street Brewery in North Park, which recently put on an event with Venissimo Cheese.

I was skeptical because, as I’ve admitted before, I’m not a fan of brews (yes, strike me dead for liking Corona with lime). Couldn’t I just eat the cheese? But I was intrigued, and heck, I had to wash down the cheese with something.

Turns out, I came away pleasantly surprised, because when the flavors worked together, I found beer more palatable than ever before.

We tried five Thorn Street beers: a hefeweizen, a Belgian blond ale, an extra special bitter, an IPA, and an imperial Russian stout. The cheeses, on the other hand, came from all over the world and offered their own complexity - both in texture and taste.

We savored a silky soft Brunet goat cheese from Italy (a nice match with the hef), a super stinky French Munster, a Vermont cheddar, a Minnesota ghouda, a Delice de Bourgogne triple cream from France (a hit with the IPA), a Blue cheese from New York, and an aged ghouda from the Netherlands.

Beer and Cheese??

For each pairing, Rob Graff from Venissimo offered us a slice of a different cheese, sometimes two different cheeses. Our initial impulse, before listening to instruction, was to pop the whole chunk in our mouths, because when you’re offered a delicious cheese, why put on the brakes?

Because, like a first date, a good date, anyway, it’s better to take it slow. So we followed Rob’s direction: first taste the cheese (swallow), next sip the beer (swallow), then taste the cheese again, and while it is still dancing on your tongue and flirting with your taste buds, chase it with beer.

Did I really like that extra special bitter? Me? Yes, the cheese made it palatable. Who knew?

To finish off the evening, Rob served us a dessert cheese - a sweet, droopy mango-ginger stilton from England. That we ate on its own, without beer.

I would love to see such an event in South Park. Where do you think it might work? Hamilton’s? Alchemy? Eclipse?

Orange, CA: Spin! Neapolitan Pizza

SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza’s first franchise location is now open in Southern California in the City of Orange near Honda Center and Angels Stadium of Anaheim in Orange County. The restaurant is operated by Hofman Hospitality Group (HHG), which has completed a franchise agreement to open 37 SPIN!® restaurants throughout Southern California. SPIN!’s award-winning, premium fast-casual concept is known for its exceptional artisan food made from fresh ingredients without the gourmet price, its eclectic, affordable premium wines, and its inviting and warm culture and environment.
SPIN!’s first franchisee, HHG, also founded and operates two successful restaurant concepts in the West including 17 Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que locations in California, Arizona and Nevada, and five Hof’s Hut restaurants in Southern California. HHG will open a second SPIN! in early 2014 in Los Alamitos, Calif.
Named a “Breakout Brand” in 2013 by restaurant industry authority Nation’s Restaurant News and honored as one of the “Rest of the 101 Best Restaurants” in the nation by top foodie website TheDailyMeal.com, SPIN! serves authentic Neapolitan pizza coupled with the types of salads, sandwiches and sides that appeal to a more healthful and eclectic American palate. One of its more popular pizzas, the Margherita, was crowned one of the best dishes of 2012 by a national restaurant publication, its architecture won Best of Show, and it has been awarded best pizza honors by numerous publications in its hometown of Kansas City.
Unique Distinctions:
SPIN! was founded in 2005 by restaurant industry veterans Gail and Richard Lozoff and Edwin Brownell, who are experienced in large multi-unit expansion, franchising, and operations. The Lozoffs had visited pizzerias across Italy and wanted to create a warm and fun modern dining experience built around the earthy flavors of Italy with a fresh and healthy emphasis. They partnered with James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Smith to create a broadly appealing menu that features authentic Neapolitan pizza with a modern culinary twist. The award-winning concept has five locations in Greater Kansas City with a sixth under construction.
“At SPIN!, our goal is to serve a perfetta (perfect) pizza to every guest and to make each guest feel totally cared for,” said Gail Lozoff. “In Italy, pizza is an important part of the fabric of life, shared almost every day with friends and family. We wanted to bring that casual, delicious experience to the U.S. and are thrilled to have found a like-minded franchise partner like Craig Hofman.”
SPIN! also is recognized for its pioneering hybrid service model, which combines traditional
fast-casual ordering in the restaurant’s lobby with a robust full-service experience at the table. The “premium fast-casual” system is more appealing to diners, such as families and employees on lunch break, who want to control the speed of their meal without sacrificing service.
Craig Hofman, president of HHG, says SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza’s unique service model, authentic Neapolitan pizza, and menu offer a new kind of dining experience in Southern California. “Before I partnered with the founders of SPIN!, I was on a quest to create my own Neapolitan pizza brand. When I first visited SPIN! in Kansas City, the menu and the attention to quality and innovation immediately impressed me. I am convinced that SPIN! will appeal tremendously to pizza and fresh artisan food lovers here in Orange County,” said Hofman.
Lauded by Food Critics and Guests:
SPIN! offers a diverse selection of hand-spun, stone-fired, traditional thin-and-bubbly crust, rustic whole wheat crust, and gluten-free pizzas. SPIN!’s pizza dough is made fresh every day using several types of flour including one imported directly from Italy, and its gluten free crust is renowned for its flavor. SPIN! takes the unique step of roasting all toppings and ingredients in its stone hearth ovens each day, including mushrooms, caramelized onions, artichokes, and even capers, pecans, pineapples, pine nuts, and pancetta. SPIN! offers both traditional Pizza Rossa (red pizzas with crushed Roma tomato sauce) and Pizza Bianca (white pizzas with roasted garlic olive oil glaze), and a variety of hand-grated cheeses.
SPIN! also offers a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, signature Panini and Italian deli sandwiches, and gelato. All of SPIN!’s soups, salad dressings, pizza toppings, and ingredients are prepared fresh daily from fresh produce and meats.
Wine enthusiasts will appreciate SPIN!’s approach, which centers on offering a wide variety of premium wines well below traditional full-service restaurant prices. SPIN! also offers white, red and blood orange sangrias and a selection of craft beers.
SPIN!’s new Orange, Calif. location is at 1623 West Katella. SPIN! also has Missouri locations in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit and Kansas locations in Overland Park, Lenexa, and Olathe. For more information, please visit http://www.spinpizza.com.

Long Beach, CA: Hotel Maya

One of the grandest civilizations in the history of the world is that of the Mayans, the collapse of which is still shrouded in mystery. Beginning in 2000 BC and thriving until 1500 AD, The Mayan culture built awe-inspiring temples, pyramids and cities within their complex social and political order. While the growth of this society was well documented, lost are any details of the decline of their world, with only remnants left behind of this ancient civilization.
Paying homage to this mysterious culture stands the Hotel Maya along the harbor in Long Beach. Complete with the unique and spectacular architectural style of the stepped pyramids, Hotel Maya welcomes guests into their "village" of modern structures assembled to create this luxurious seaside resort. Spacious, well-appointed rooms greet guests with all of the amenities one would long for in a resort stay. Organic yet sumptuous decor and beautiful, comfortable bedding, combined with a stunning terrace view set the mood for a well deserved respite from reality.

Tucked away throughout the resort are hidden cabanas, with intimate seating and built in romance. Along the dramatic poolside, as well as hidden in Fuego Restaurant within the hotel, private love nests await affectionate couples. Perfect for lovers and families alike, Hotel Maya offers fire pits, volleyball, tennis courts, bicycle rental and beach front activities. Just a stone's throw away from the historic Queen Mary, and just moments from Downtown Long Beach, Hotel Maya provides a quiet refuge for vacationers.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and sporting an active bar as well, Fuego Restaurant lies perched within the second floor of the Main Building, divided between indoors and out, boasting a dramatic terrace for seaside dining. Opulence abounds in the alfresco dining room, with a staff serving up more than delicious dishes and refreshing drinks, but also a "getaway" atmosphere. The warm surroundings set the tone for the fine dining choices, creating a truly authentic Latin American feel.

Specializing in mariscos dishes, a combination of fish and shellfish, Fuego Restaurant also features a sumptuous array of appetizers and entrées, including steak, carnitas and pasta. The house specialty is the Seafood Crepas, crepes filled with crab meat and rock shrimp, covered lightly with a roasted Poblano sauce. Flavorful, yet delicate, the Crepas are the perfect representation of the mariscos style. The Bone In Rib Eye is a generous portion of excellent beef, rubbed with New Mexico Chili and grilled, served with a tasty Roasted Tomato Pasilla Sauce and fresh roasted vegetables. Thick, juicy and deliciously tender, this rib eye will please the hungriest of men as well as the most discriminating palette.

Whether a guest is in town on business at the Long Beach Convention Center, or vacationing for a lengthy stay on the harbor, Hotel Maya will meet every expectation with a smile. Evident in their graciousness and warmth, the staff at Hotel Maya genuinely want to please each and every guest, on every visit.

Murphys, CA: Murphys Historic Hotel

murphys historic hotel
Haunted!

When you arrive in the authentic town of Murphys, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, the locals will ask about where you are staying. If your response is "Murphys Historic Hotel," expect the response to be, "Haunted! That hotel is haunted! Did you see Eleanor?"

Legend has it that a former chambermaid Eleanor waited 30 years for her new husband to return from the gold mining hills with their fortune until she died broken hearted at Murphys Historic Hotel. Certainly not the only ghost to haunt these halls, Eleanor has become the most notable of the cast of spiritual characters in permanent residence. Guests enjoy exchanging their encounters with one another and hotel staff, comparing thrilling notes of spiritual intrigue.

The hotel was built in 1856 and has been in service, never missing a day, to hotel guests since opening day. A former Wells Fargo Stage coach stop, Murphys is a registered National Historic Landmark having hosted such notable historic figures as Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, Horatio Alger, Susan B. Anthony, JP Morgan, John Wayne, Sunny Ficus, and Charles Bolton, a.k.a. Black Bart the “Gentleman Bandit. Rich with history, legend, folklore and nostalgia, Murphys Hotel is a "must visit" for travelers with a thirst for yesteryear.

Divided in two sections, historic and modern rooms, travelers have options for their stay. Historic rooms are nearly perfectly authentic. Original hardwood floors, complete with the squeaks, grace each space. Elegant french doors, still fitted with the iron shutters that once saved the hotel from a town-devastating fire, lead to the second story veranda on street facing rooms. Period furnishings lend to the essence of the late 1800's still rich in the air. Equipped with a sink and electricity, these rooms utilize shared bathrooms. The 4 "water closets" are located at the end of a short hall, shared with 9 rooms, as well as 4 showers, all located in small, individual rooms. Lovely and sweet modern rooms come complete with all of the conveniences, for those who prefer to keep the "history" in the quaint town. Impeccably clean, intriguingly authentic and thoroughly enjoyable, even the mildest adventurer will relish their own step back in time.

The town of Murphys is filled with adorable shops and beautiful wine tasting rooms. With 16 tasting rooms within a short walking distance, Murphys Hotel is located in the prime spot for the wine lover. Nestled amongst the tasting rooms, cupcake shops, clothing boutiques, Indian curiosities, consignment stores, and antique dealers line Main Street for a exciting shopping experience. Our favorite find, and quietly deceiving by it's name, Murphys Motorcycle Company, evokes a sense of goods for the hardcore biker. Yet, surprisingly elegant clothing for ladies hangs within; high end, designer brands, beautifully made and so soft to the touch, women who've never touched a bike will find something she can't live without here. While the girls oooo and ahhh, the guys will enjoy the selection of awesome T-shirts and riding paraphernalia as well.

murphys hotel restaurant
Murphys Historic Hotel serves an array of dining options, from hometown breakfast to elegant dinner dining. The Famous Fried Chicken is "Andy Griffith Mmmmm mmmmm" good! Made by one of the hotel owner's himself, the chicken is amazingly tender and moist, with a perfectly spiced crust that is crispy and flavorful. Homestyle, country mashed potatoes, tender fresh vegetables, and heavenly chicken gravy complete the serving. A House Specialty, diners will long for the Old South with every bite.

Graced with the professional, kind and sincere staff, Murphys Historic Hotel meets every need for visitors, often before a request is made. Mention you're traveling around the state, and the front desk clerk offers a new National Geographic map. Ask a question in the restaurant about your food and the chef comes tableside to answer. Above and beyond expected service, the only disappointment guests will have will be leaving. Some hotels make one's stay lovely. Murphys Historic Hotel makes one want to just stay.

One of San Diego's largest communities, East Village stretches from the Gas Lamp District to the west to the I-5 Freeway to the east. Cathedral City, CA: Cello's American Bistro - Refreshing Limmoncello

Recently opened in Cathedral City sits an award winning restaurant where the owners make some of the best limoncello I have ever tasted. If you are not already familiar with limoncello, it is an Italian lemon liquor that is produced in Southern Italy off the Amlafi coast.

What began as a small catering company is now one of the busiest restaurants in the California desert. The owner's come from Connecticut and recently made the desert their home. Tommy "Cello" as he is frequently referred to is the magician who makes fantastic lemon liquor, which is traditionally served as an after dinner drink or digestive as the culinary experts like to describe it.

The restaurant itself is located in an out-of-the way shopping center that has seen better days. But don't let that dissuade you, this tantalizing American Bistro that was selected as one of the ten best restaurants by Palm Springs Life Magazine. Located on Date Palm Drive and Gerald Ford Drive, Cello's invited me in with their warm, cozy and relaxing vibe that made me feel right at home. The soft lighting brings an elegance and sophistication that lacks the stuffiness that some would think. And with live Jazz providing a soothing ambience sound to the atmosphere, was just the right touch to move the night.

On the night that I was there with my wife, we were given the option to eat inside or outside on the patio, and with the cool breeze on a summer night, the patio worked just fine. After a brief conversation that included sharing a few laughs with the owners, we started off the evening with some wine and an Onion Soup Fondue that comes equipped with a deep-dark, richly flavored broth along with caramelized onions and three croutons to give it that right appeal.

When my main course arrived I can see why this place was the winner of the 2011 Restaurant of the Year award. My wife ordered the 'Pasta of the Day" and I the "Catch of the Day" which was a mussels and prawns dish that was prepared to perfection. My wife's Eggplant Cannelloni left little to be desired, stuffed with spinach and ricotta and served with a marinara sauce. Our friends ordered what is purported to be Cello's signature entrée, the Chicken Caprese. It is a flavorful choice that is groomed with yellow and red cherry tomatoes along with mini fresh mozzarella balls.

For desert we shared strawberries stuffed with marscarpone and dipped in rich chocolate and a tiramisu that gives cake an added dimension with the pudding filling.

Of course, we all finished with the limoncello, which is a little bit of Italy in glass.

Cello's is open 7 days a week, starting at 5:00pm.

Cody's of La Jolla

After a morning in La Jolla amongst bustling beach goers and impatient tourists, the afternoon begs for a quiet lunch on a sunny patio. Of which Cody's is more than happy to deliver both.

Tucked several blocks away from the busy beach, but still within view of the crashing waves, Cody's is the perfect place to relax in peace and enjoy a delicious meal.

cody's la jolla
Their ambiance combines modern rustic decor with welcoming pop-bright accents. Potted succulents sit upon reclaimed wood tabletops while paisley pillows nestled in bright green patio chairs tempt weary travelers to sit and rest for a while.

The menu offers fresh seafood favorites in classic preparations, or a delightful brunch, should you arrive in time.

Cody's fish and chips is a restaurant favorite at the genuine recommendation of anyone who has tried it. Lightly battered Pacific Cod is served atop a slightly salty handful of fresh cut french fries, topped with the world's best onion rings, and finished with a side duo of homemade sauces for dipping.

Their Grilled Crab Cakes, served with a tomato basil tartar, receives similar 5-star reviews of "yummy" and "amazing."

Cambria, CA: Madeline's of Cambria

Madelines of CambriaOn the main drag, tucked in between the little shops and realty offices in the tiny coastal town of Cambria, is a small restaurant, Madeline’s. Chef David at Madeline’s is praised by all of the locals as having the best food in Cambria, bar none. Many insisted we go to Madeline’s for the filet mignon, chicken with Brie, and after dinner be certain to have the “Chocolate Thing”. In the early afternoon we walked into Madeline’s, and Chef David made reservations for us himself. When I asked, he said he was indeed making the “Chocolate Thing”. Bartender Kelly served up a few wine tasters for us, and an exquisite cognac, just to whet our palates.

Madeline's CambriaThat evening, dinner was exquisite, and everything, including the “Chocolate Thing” was everything we were promised. The Chicken with Brie was a tender chicken breast wrapped around a small portion of brie and fresh herbs, coated with a breadcrumb mixture and lightly pan fried in butter to a golden perfection. Served with exquisite scalloped potatoes, sliced nearly paper-thin and layered with heavy cream and gruyere cheese, and baked. The potatoes were so phenomenal, I nearly asked for seconds! The freshly steamed broccoli was tender crisp and lightly seasoned, complimenting the seemingly simple yet incredibly delicious meal.

filet mignon madeline'sThe filet mignon was a generous portion of buttery steak, flavorful, that cut into tender, moist slices of angus delight. Seasoned lightly on the outside, pan seared and doused with a pan jus, each bite seemed to bring about thoughts of cattle roaming the coastal countryside grazing on grasses that blew in the Pacific breeze.

With a great selection of hard-to-find wines, Madeline’s offers not only the perfect wine for your meal, but appropriate advice when asked which wine would suit the palette. Pairing wines is often spoken of, but when a restaurant specializes in bringing the best of local wines and creating dishes that compliment those wines, then the service is complete. William, our server, asked a few questions before recommending a wine, and made excellent suggestions. Pleased with every glass for every course, we were able to enjoy the best of both offerings.

In any great restaurant, dessert must be decadent and climactic, in order to not be overshadowed by the main course. The “Chocolate Thing” was spectacular! Layers of chocolate crust, and the best dark chocolate, semi-dark chocolate, chocolate sauce all served in a fluffy bed of freshly whipped cream, drizzled with just a bit more chocolate sauce, the entire dessert was almost too beautiful to eat. So rich and smooth, each bite was pure ecstasy. This is a chocolate dessert I will dream of for years, as only a true chocoholic would. Truly, the “Chocolate Thing” should be renamed the “Chocolate Dream”.

Madeline’s is far more than a place to eat. Our server William was so courteous, kind, and willing to please, we felt we had made a friend before dinner was completed. Chef David took the time to leave the kitchen and speak with each guest, welcoming them to his restaurant and thanking them for their patronage. He is a warm, friendly, and outgoing man who loves what he does; preparing exquisite food for his customers. In a romantic and serene atmosphere, a couple can enjoy an extraordinary meal, great service, great wine, and the company of one another.

Temecula, CA: Yard House of Temecula

Temecula is often synonymous with wines, the old west, antique shops, and golf. But thanks to a real estate boom in the 1990s and early 2000s, Temecula, CA has seen an influx of vibrant, urban living that has brought with it a more contemporary, modern lifestyle.

Yard House opened its doors to Temecula in 2009 as a centerpiece to the city's newly redesigned Promenade Mall, offering diners the finest in eclectic cuisine in the heart of Southwest California's energetic nightlife.

Our first step inside revealed modern, industrial decor with combination of angular steel beams and round pipes. Contemporary music showered down from the ceiling mixing with a cacophony of energetic, youthful clientele, while colorful artwork in the form of paintings and pottery reflected flair of an au courant touch.

Ales and lagers are the choice of Yard House patrons, contrary to the Temecula's well-known reputation for wineries. And you'll find 132 taps in all, enough for the establishment to claim as the largest collection under one roof. And not just domestic pilsners, but craft brews from small breweries throughout the west coast, including those in Southern California.

We started with Shrimp Ceviche Spoons from their Snacks menu, a mixture of mango & papaya salsa with seasoned tortilla strips, neatly placed on a set of four shiny spoons. Tangy is the word that seemed to dominate our thoughts culminating the freshness of the mango and papaya, bell pepper and corn.

From their Appetizer menu, we tried the Lobster, Crab & Artichoke Dip, combining maine lobster, blue crab, artichoke hearts, with a four cheese blend of feta, jack, parmesan and cream cheese, centered inside a mixture of tortilla chips and flat bread. The panko bread crumbs created a layer of crunch on top, while an olive oil blend teamed up with black pepper and parsley added extra flavor dimension.

Do you think you've already tried the best Mac & Cheese ever? You may give it another thought after trying Yard House's own version of the popular fare. With a blend of cheddar and parmesan, smoked applewood bacon, chicken breast, wild mushrooms, and truffle oil, tossed together into a cheesy, chunky, pasta party, we found it to be the ultimate expression of creative Americana.

But the Pan Seared Ahi, which we understood to be among the restaurant's most popular item, to be the most impressive. Large chunks of soft, silky sashimi grade tuna, seared rare over jasmine rice, and doused with a chinese black bean sauce, fried basil, and accompanied with asparagus, was a sight to behold. Easy enough to cut with a fork, the tuna was a perfect fit for the lightly sweetened, black bean sauce, which had touches of soy sauce and ginger.

To satisfy the sweet tooth, we recommend the Trio Sampler, a mini serving of their lemon soufflé, peach apple cobbler and chocolate soufflé. The lemon soufflé was tangy, with rich lemony flavor, real whipped topping, that reminded us running through the sprinklers on an August afternoon, and finishing up with a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade.

The chocolate soufflé was lightly sweet, just right, warm and moist with a contrasting compliment of cold ice cream and mint leaves, like sensual kisses of Godiva chocolate that takes your breath away.

But we couldn't leave you without recommending a glass of Yard House's very own Belgian Trippel Ale. Brewed in Belgium by Brasserie de Silly, an award winning brewery since 1850, we found it to be a excellent belgian trippel in its own right, well balanced between a candied malt flavor, hoppy finish, and just enough kick to leave you smiling in between sips.

Buellton, CA: Firestone Walker Brewery Restaurant

With the popularity of craft brewing reaching new highs throughout California, comes the quest to build the perfect brew pubs, beer bars, and brewhouse restaurants.

And with that said, Firestone Walker Brewery may have built the perfect restaurant in Buellton, CA to showcase their award winning ales alongside the finest eats in the Santa Ynez Valley.

When one steps through the doors of the Tap Room Restaurant, richly appointed with oak tables and brushed stainless steel bars, they are brought into a dark, airy, pub with the sounds of music and chatter, vintage posters and decorations reminiscent of 1940's film noir.

Upon taking our seats at a table upon the balcony, we were treated to a basket of warm sourdough and butter. I started with a glass of Firestone Walker's Double Barrel Ale, the company's flagship brew, an English style pub ale with a balance of roasted malt and hops, that continues to bring the brewery awards and accolades.

Our server then brought us crab cakes, which we were told continue to be a popular appetizer among the restaurant's regulars. Light and fluffy, seated over a pour of rice wine vinegar aioli, and accompanied by a side of mixed mizuna, carrots, and diakon radish slaw, it was an experience that combined the best of Maryland and Central California onto one plate.

But we were here for two of the Taproom's favorite main courses, the Seared Ahi Tuna and Daniel's Pork Chops. Seasoned with herbs, then crusted with parmesan, and splashed with a red wine reduction, Daniel's Pork Chops were thick sliced and every bite welcomed our mouths with moist, tender, chewing and a full, rich flavor of the "other white meat". Meanwhile, the Seared Ahi Tuna, was seared rare, adorned with sesame seeds, and accompanied with wasabi-aoli snow peas and a red onion slaw.

Guests can order the brewery's beer sampler, consisting of your choice of any four of Firestone Walker's many brews on tap. We particularly liked their Double Jack IPA, pairing well with the pork chops, and the Walker's Reserve Porter, pairing up with the ice cream-topped brownie and raspberry sauce.
